"From Costume to Bridal Gown to Dori Anne Veils."
Debra LaSpina Goldwater, like many girls, loved dressing up as a child. Halloween was always here favorite time of year and she was famous for her dress-up tea parties and garage fashion shows. But unlike most girls, she didn't leave it at that. Perhaps because of the role models in Debra's life; a Grandmother from Sicily who made her living as a seamstress and continued to sew until the ripe old age of 100, and a mother who followed in her path, doing professional bridal gown alterations and designing bridal hats and veils.
Her mother also made her own bridal gown, as well as making Debra's bridal gown many years later! Both of these women were to encourage Debra every step of the way.
Continuing in this tradition, Debra's search for professional training in fashion design led her to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising where she earned a degree in fashion design in 1976. After graduation, she continued working at many jobs in the costume and design field including the Oakland Ballet and San Francisco Opera Guild. The transition from costume to bridal gown was natural when she accepted a position as a full time bridal gown seamstress for Holiday Bridal in 1988. There she became an expert in bridal gown designs and alterations, as well as creating beautiful bridal veils. Debra feels the wedding is the ultimate show and the bride is the star!
In 1997 because of Debra's passion for designing bridal veils, Dori Anne Veils was established. Named after her then 6 year old daughter. Today Debra's studio is located in Castro Valley, where she also lives with her husband, Jeff and their two teen-aged children Danny and Dori.
